This 19-story tower, designed by Gensler and installed by National Glass and Metal, brings an innovative new building to the heart of Philadelphia’s business district.
The tower glass on this building will be Viracon’s VRE1-46, with a 5/16” clear outboard lite. This reflective low-e coating combines a bright, silver color with an excellent Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) of 0.27 and optimal Visible Light Transmittance (VLT) of 42%. This VLT is especially important in an office building; anything higher than 45-50% has the potential to cause issues with glare, and cause a need for interior shades.
The 5/16” outboard lite will provide the glass an extremely flat appearance. Using a heavy outboard lite is especially important when using reflective type coatings, because any sort of distortion is more easily seen with reflective glass.
The podium portion of the building will feature Viracon’s VE13-2M glass type. With a VLT of 75%, this glass will give people walking past the building excellent views to the interior, and the use of a 5/16” outboard lite will maintain excellent glass flatness. The use of low-iron glass on this podium portion will ensure that there won’t be any additional green tint. This combination of VE-2M and low-iron glass will give 2222 Market a neutral appearance on the ground floor areas.
The innovative glass for this project was initially sent to a unitized curtainwall facility before being sent to the job site. This is a trend that we’ve seen more of lately, and fully expect it to continue. Unitizing large projects can make the install more efficient and assembling in a controlled facility can help minimize human error.
